Why starting with "I make videos" keeps you broke

What’s up legends,
Its Wine Wednesdays for those of you who are alcoholics. I’M JOKING
That’s what we call a pattern interrupt.
Anyways… Most videographers have it backwards.
They start with deliverables: "I create high-quality videos."
Then they wonder why they're stuck at $5k/month doing custom work for anyone with a pulse.
Here's the shift that changed everything for my students:
Stop starting with WHAT you do. Start with WHO you serve.
Let me show you exactly what I mean.
When you start with deliverables, you're forced to work with everyone. Which means everything is custom. Which means you can't build systems. Which means you can't scale.
But when you start with your ICP (Ideal Client Profile)?
Magic happens.
Take local service businesses. Here's their gap:
Point A: Inconsistent lead flow (feast or famine)
|
|
Point B: Predictable qualified appointments every month
That gap? That's your opportunity.
Now instead of saying "I make videos," you can say:
"I help HVAC companies book 10-30 qualified appointments per month using our proven content-to-conversion system."
See the difference?
One is a commodity. The other is a SOLUTION.
Here's where it gets good.
Once you identify that specific gap for that specific person, you can create ONE solution that works every time:
High-converting organic content (using AI to scale)
Ad creatives that actually stop the scroll
Full ad management (setup to optimization)
AI appointment setter (because speed to lead = everything)
This isn't custom work anymore.
This is a productized system.
Same solution. Same process. Same results.
Every. Single. Time.
The math is beautiful:
Custom video work = Different process for each client = Can't systematize = Stuck trading time for money
Productized solution = Same proven system = Scalable processes = Charge 5k/month instead of 5k for 30 videos/month
My student Gee made this shift 3 months ago.
He sent me his number last week
6 clients closed at $5k/month
3 more in the pipeline
Working LESS while charging the same amount and making more of an impact
Why? Because he stopped being a video vendor and became a revenue partner.
Here's your homework:
Pick ONE type of business to serve
Find their biggest gap (hint: it's usually leads or sales)
Design a solution that fills that gap completely
Package it as a system, not a service
Remember: The bigger the gap you fill, the more you can charge.
And with AI? You can now fill gaps that used to require entire teams.
Stop selling videos. Start solving problems.
That's how you go from freelancer to founder.
