Why most videographers stay broke (and how to fix it)

Hey, Happy Thursday!

It’s been a minute since I’ve hit your inbox. I’ve been busy moving into a new apartment (finally settled in 🎉).

Here’s an awkward picture of me in my new office.

But here’s the thing… while I’ve been offline packing boxes, the business kept running. Clients kept getting results. Sales kept coming in.

That’s the power of having a real team and real systems in place.

If growth stops every time you get busy… you’ll never scale. (Note to self haha - as I always need to remind myself)

Anyway, let’s dive into something I’ve been thinking a lot about lately...

Most videographers never make more than $90K a year in personal income.

And it’s not because they aren’t talented.

It’s because they’re playing the wrong game.

I used to be stuck too - charging $1,500 for “brand videos,” hoping clients would magically come back for more. Until I realized the real problem:

👉 Most creatives don’t grow because they’re selling the wrong thing.

Here’s the game you should be playing:

Instead of selling one-off “video assets,” start owning a bigger part of the value ladder. That’s where the money is.

Here’s what it looks like:

  1. Generate Attention - What most videographers stop at.

  2. Generate Leads - Turn that attention into interested prospects.

  3. Book Appointments - Get your clients conversations on the calendar.

  4. Make Sales - Help them convert those leads into buyers.

  5. Drive Repeat Business - Create systems for long-term growth.

Most of you? You're stuck at Step 1. Maybe not even that.

You’re delivering pretty videos… that never get posted. Or worse, that don’t move the needle for your clients at all.

And because of that - you’re seen as a vendor, not a partner. And vendors are replaceable.

Especially now…

AI is coming fast. Like… scary fast.
One of my friends made a promo video using AI that’s better than what most videographers charge $5K for. And it cost him less than dinner.

But here’s the silver lining: AI isn’t your enemy. It’s your leverage.

When you shift from “video creator” to “customer acquisition strategist,” everything changes:

  • You stop competing on price.

  • You become vital to your clients’ revenue.

  • You’re no longer optional - you’re a must-have.

Here’s how you make that shift:

✅ Step 1: Sell outcomes, not assets.
✅ Step 2: Learn how to control leads, appointments, and sales.
✅ Step 3: Use AI to automate the grunt work and multiply your results.

It starts by asking yourself:

  • Am I selling videos?

  • or am I selling business growth?

Because only one of those gets paid like a partner.

If you’re ready to break out of the commodity trap and build a business that lasts - keep an eye on your inbox. I’ll be sharing more strategies just like this to help you level up.
